My students come from an extremely low-income neighborhood where twenty students drop out from grades 7 and 8 each year. The only hope for them to escape this harsh reality is to receive a remarkable education. The school where I work is in a low-income area where 797 of our students (96%) receive free lunch daily. Many of these students are surrounded by new challenges each day in their homes and communities, therefore making it even more imperative that they receive an excellent education. I teach a group of 115 remarkable fifth graders who are working relentlessly to pass their state test and move onto the sixth grade. They amaze me each day as they work harder and harder to achieve their goal despite what is going on outside of the school's walls. Fifth grade is a difficult year because my students have to pass three state tests in order to advance. Despite how hard they work, many of them are extremely behind grade level and still learning how to read and write.
