I teach three math periods a day to approximately 100 sixth grade students. I also tutor over 25 students during their lunch time twice a week. Over 32 students attend my after school math enrichment program for about 70 minutes once a week for the entire year. More than half of my sixth graders are second language learners. Using manipulatives such as multilink cubes will facilitate the understanding of abstract concepts such as perimeter, area, surface area, volume, as well as algebraic functions, and they will use the calculators to check their work. It is powerful when students construct their own learning by simply manipulating tools that open many doors!
