This is my first year teaching about the World Wars. The materials that I had handed down to me were boring. I began using a book about Anne Frank and the students couldn't get enough of it. I have found that my students' understanding of historical events stays with them longer, and they understand them more deeply when they can use books to visualize the events and become part of the story. Whether it is nonfiction or realistic fiction, they are engaged and learning. These books will give them another level of understanding as to how some soldiers needed dogs to not only serve as useful partners but to cope with the war.
