Flexible seating has recently become the new trend in classrooms for many important reasons. Flexible seating offers opportunity to work cooperatively by moving away from traditional desk seating. My classroom population is made up of at least 50% English Language Learners. Working cooperatively is especially important to be able to serve those students, while benefiting all involved. My classroom is a fifth grade classroom. That means that students are entering stages of puberty. This means that my students' bodies are growing and shifting. Traditional desk seating is not conducive for these growing bodies. Flexible seating is a chance at meeting the needs of the stage to student fit. Instead of forcing the body to fit the seating in traditional classroom settings, my goal is to fit the setting (the stage) to the student. This will allow for students to focus on their work instead of focusing on trying to get comfortable.
