As a first year teacher, the only books in my classroom library are the ones left by the teacher who was in my classroom before me. Unfortunately, most of the books she left are outdated, faded, and ripped. Those books are not inviting for even the most avid readers, so it was no surprise when none of my students wanted to check them out. It wasn't until I brought in a couple books from my home library that I had students excited about reading and asking to borrow books. I believe that in order for students to love reading, they need access to plenty of interesting and diverse books. These books will help my students find joy in independent reading. With an updated classroom library full of stories and characters they can identify with, my students will be able to see themselves in their novels and become excited about literature. I can't wait to watch my students grow, not only in their ability to read and comprehend text, but also in their love for books.
