As I grow as a professional educator and teacher of developing readers, I have gained additional insight and knowledge of the mechanics of becoming a reader. A growing body of comprehensive research, called the Science of Reading, shows that teaching explicit phonemic awareness and phonics skills as the basis of reading is best practices for teachers working with the most at-risk scholars. Becoming a reader can be an uphill battle for many students, especially students who have experienced poverty stricken environments and/or are learning English alongside their language of origin. These materials will support my scholars and I on our journey to become better readers. Decodable reading books, world building games, and flexible seating, will be used in small group lessons to support my students as we learn explicit phonics strategies developed through research on the science of reading. I hope you will partner with me to grow the readers and leaders of the future!
