Our school library was built in 1951. It's the cutest little library in our district, but our students truly deserve updates to provide a warm and welcoming place to sit and read. As the heart of the school, our library leads in building a school-wide reading culture through the school improvement plan where our goal is to increase the number of 3rd graders reading at grade level. However, to be successful in creating "Rockin' Readers", we need to create an environment where students can sit and read in our school library. As we are in the process of creating the new learning commons model in our library, our students need flexible seating they can freely move around the library to sit and read. Students are always looking for reading nooks to independently read and providing them with flexible seating empowers them to do so. Students are so excited to check out and read books from the library, but they want to stay a while, and the question I get asked the most since the beginning of the school year as their new school librarian is, "Where can I sit to read my books?" The best feeling for any educator is to hear a student excited about reading, but the best image is seeing our students sitting comfortably, with a smile on their face, and emerged in reading the stories that build life-long readers, build reading fluency and build comprehension. Reading is the foundation for all subject areas because stories provide the background information needed to learn in language arts, science, and social studies, as well as library research curriculum. Adding flexible rocking chairs and stools will create independent reading opportunities that invite students to sit and read in the heart of the school; our school library.
