At the start of every school year, I hear the same two phrases from my students: 'I don't really read' or 'I hate reading'. How can we, as educators, parents, and mentors (or anyone who cares about our future generation) re-ignite a love for reading? How can we make it so that instead of having a hard time getting a child to pick up a book, we can't get them to put it down? Friends, we must expose our kids to a variety of text, showing them that there are in fact books out there that tell their story. We must give our kids the space to pick up a book and...gasp, enjoy it. That, my dear readers, is why I dream of building an accessible in-class library. Students need to come into our room and be surrounded by literature. Last year, in my classroom, we tested this crazy idea of allowing students to read for enjoyment. Every day, for the first ten minutes of class (we build up to this;it does not happen overnight), students pulled out there book of choice, and read. Jorge came to me a couple months into the year. He was a very reluctant reader. He frequently told me he hated reading, and that no book would ever interest him. That was until he read S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders. Wonderful donors, it was like a reading lightbulb went off inside Jorge. He quickly picked up another book, and then another. And friends, he wasn't the only one. So many students found their love of reading. Won't you join me in continuing that mission to re-ignite a love of reading in schools? Who knows, maybe your contribution will purchase the one book that sparks a teen's love of reading for many years to come. Thank you!
