Literature gives us a lens with which to understand the world better. For students to be engaged, we must utilize literature that allows them to see themselves. Too often, it is not that students dislike reading but that they dislike reading an unrelatable and dated text. Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop, professor emerita at Ohio State University, says, “Literature transforms human experience and reflects it to us, and in that reflection, we can see our own lives and experiences as part of the larger human experience.” This project will allow my students to see themselves in literature. I want to purchase titles from the Bluford Series that allow for student choice in small groups. I also want to purchase non-fiction texts that will allow collaboration with our Social Studies department, racial justice, and representation issues to be discussed, and student buy-in with the literature.
