My students are mostly IEP and ELL students who struggle with reading. Reading is not considered "cool" to them, and it stems from the fact that so many of them are so far behind. My students come from diverse cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds. Their parents aren't around to check if they're doing their homework because they often work several jobs. Many of my students are also caregivers for their younger siblings, so their homework comes second to their siblings'. They want to do well, but often they don't know how, and don't have the materials to do so.
