To be ready to learn, most of my students need to have a sensory experience. We call this their 'sensory diet'. My classroom is full of diverse learners, and I want to meet the needs of everyone. With little access to sensory items, I would like to provide this opportunity for my students. Sensory seats help focus during lessons, sensory materials help calm during play, and sensory games allow for students to learn in various ways (rather than just staying in the sand table every day!) I want to provide them more than one item to help them enjoy school and find a love for learning! Materials that meet their needs are the best way to do that for them. Sensory seats help students have flexible seating. This provides them an opportunity to sit comfortably in a large group environment. Sensory sand and clay is a strong experience for those that need to grasp themselves with that form of a sensory experience. Something like a water table might not be strong enough of a sensory material for them. And soft sand is easily lifted (again not heavy enough), so a wet feeling sand that doesn’t become gross too quickly is more efficient in the classroom. (Kinetic sand) A sensory experience table has multiple sensory experiences so students can vary what they’re using to meet their needs, providing more than one way to learn. Light therapy is a common relief for autistic students. These hands-on, touch, sight, smell and other sensory experiences help to create the most nurturing environment for students to learn. Thank you!
