All of my students are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, and they rely on lip reading for communication along with the use of hearing aids, Cochlear implants, or sign language. During this COVID-19 crisis, all teachers must wear a face mask at school. A solid cloth face mask does not allow my students to read the lips of the teacher that is giving instruction. Face masks also make it more difficult to hear the voice of the teachers. Without clear face masks, my hearing impaired students will not have full access to their educational environment. They will have an extremely difficult time understanding what is being said during instructional time. These masks will be given to all the teachers of my hearing impaired students, including art, music, PE, media specialist, computer lab, speech, and other therapists.
