I love my students, especially their diversity. Since my district sits on the outskirts of a city, we have a very blended community, quite full of personality. Beyond that, 8th graders in general are an awesome mix of "I still love cartoons" and "I want to be an adult." My 8th graders have a block of English, which consists of a mix of an English program and reading workshop. During reading workshop students not only read whole-group novels, such as Make Lemonade and The Giver, but they also (thankfully) get to choose to read books independently, which in my opinion, is more important than reading a book as a group. Many of my students don't have access to books at home, so since I started teaching in 2004 I have been building a classroom library for my students.
