Many children live with grown up stress. These kids may feel the weight of the world on their shoulders. My students are 10-11 years old with big worries. I have watched them dealing with economic insecurities at home, having to move (again) because there is not enough money for rent. Children live with fighting, separation, and divorce. I have had students lose a parent to deportation, incarceration, and death. My heart breaks for these kids so often. If I can provide them a place for self reflection and calming, I know they will feel ready to learn on their terms. The mindfulness spot will provide a separate place in our room for students who need time to calm their body or mind. The spot will be a rug on the floor (blue with ocean creatures), a nice big bean bag chair to sit on, sand timers to track time, and stress relief toys to keep hands busy. Books about feelings will also be available to read while using the mindfulness spot.
