When I was in high school, I could name several books that had a deep impact on me. As a part of the curriculum, Catcher in the Rye was one of my favorites, but I also read The Perks of Being a Wallflower for the first time as a sophomore and was blown away that characters can actually talk like a person from the 21st century. Whoa! After doing an informal written survey, many of my students could not name their favorite book in middle school because they have not read it yet. Many of the students from low-income households at my public, south side of Chicago school have been turned off by the canonical texts that they're tested on because they have not had the chance to simply read for pleasure.
