"I want to learn how to read so when people laugh and say I can't read, I will show them I can." This quote comes from an 8 year old student in my class who was held back in second grade this year. As a special education teacher in a second grade inclusion classroom, I was shocked to discover that 20 out of the 23 students in my class entered the second grade on a low kindergarten reading level. In my class, the majority of my students are students with special needs and English Language Learners. I teach in a low-income urban school where 90% of the students at our school receive free or reduced lunch. Many students reside in the shelters surrounding our school. In light of all of these challenges, my students are still hard-working, delightful, and enthusiastic learners.
