My students come from all over New York City. We are a Title I school in lower Manhattan serving a diverse and dedicated student body. Our school community is 62% Hispanic, 28% Black, 5% are Asian, and 3% are White. Approximately 7% of our students are English Language Learners (ELLs) and 21% of students are students with Special Needs. My students commute from Brooklyn, Bronx, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island. They are fast paced fifteen year olds living in the world of subways, crowded streets, and text messaging. It can be very difficult to get them to pause, focus, and ponder. They have the tools at their doorstep to understand the way people work - in both the small context of a family or peer group, and in the larger context of neighborhoods, race, and social class. I want to motivate them to be curious and grab from the wealth around them in order to become active members of society.
