Kindergarten students have quite a lot to learn in one short year. I strive to teach literacy skills, mathematics, social studies, science, social skills, and a bit of responsibility. We work hard to create a community of learners in the classroom who will support and challenge each other. From morning meetings to read-alouds and game time to independent reading, the carpet area is a central focus in my classroom. We start every day with a morning meeting to greet each other and set the goals for the day. At least one book is read aloud each day to introduce or practice literacy skills. Students use this area during our calendar math time to introduce and review mathematics concepts. Students also use the carpet space for independent activities, such as completing puzzles, learning games, and word play. I utilize Drop Everything and Read time with my kindergarten learners as well in order to instill a love of reading. Many choose to spread out on the floor to get comfortable and read during this time. Finally, this area allows students to learn social skills as they each take their place as valued learners in our classroom.
