Many students in our building, most of which don't have me as a teacher, visit me daily to use my classroom microwave to heat up their food. Though I love to help them out, it can be disruptive to the learning process of the students that are in class. In addition, some students are going hungry because they don't like the food choices provided by the cafeteria. Many of my students experience trauma and/or homelessness, making it hard enough to focus on their education. Adding an empty stomach on top of this makes it nearly impossible to learn. Having the ability to heat up the food we provide, or the food they bring from home, would allow the students the opportunity to go to class with a full stomach ready to learn. By bringing in these resources such as microwaves, mac and cheese, and instant noodles, it is my hope that we will allow students in need to be able to concentrate more on academics and less on meeting their basic needs.
