Our school is over 90% free and reduced lunch. This low socioeconomic status poses many challenges in every aspects of my students' lives; including reading. Books aren't priority when families are fighting to survive and provide the basic necessities. My students are HUNGRY for books and good reading. They hang on every word when I recommend books that changed my life. They'll fight over my one copy of a must read but will also wait impatiently on the waiting lists. The books I have in my classroom are all books that I've purchased for the students. As a single mom of 3, I, too, struggle and it is getting more and more difficult to keep engaging, current books on my shelves. I have a couple of students, boys, who have never read a whole book and don't plan to. They are a bit of a project for me and I plan on getting them to read something. With their hardcore backgrounds and tough lives, I'd like to hook them with books about people with similar experiences.
