I am teacher to English Language Learners in a very diverse school in Woodside, Queens NYC. Most of my students are the first generation to go to school in America. This will be year three teaching Second Grade for me. In my school, our Learning Centers are literacy based. With the help of some great websites like Teachers Pay Teachers and Pinterest I have found some great DIY center lessons. Unfortunately, those are often time consuming and costly to make (in either cardstock or laminating, printer ink) because multiple sets are needed. Materials that are tactile give my students the opportunities to problem solve, communicate with classmates using English as a shared language, be engaged, and practice essential phonetic and reading skills. We would greatly and excitedly love to use more of these kinds of materials in our learning centers to help our students achieve!
