Many of our students work very hard to learn and engage in their world independently and require significant environmental and materials modification and reduction in distraction to access their curriculum. Safe sensory materials also provide an opportunity for independent access to curriculum activities. Modifiable partitions that can be used for visual cues and instructions when separating workspaces is critical for increasing independence. In addition to modulating sensory needs, these safe sensory materials provide an avenue for STEM learning and math manipulatives. The learners in my classroom have diverse sensory needs, and providing safe options for those needs is critical for their learning. Funding this project will put safe materials into the hands of my students, to help them learn both academic and self-regulation skills.
