The funding from this project will provide my kindergarten through second grade classroom with high quality books that will support the development of emotional regulation skills necessary to manage their emotions. These books will allow us to have conversations around our emotional health and learn skills for developing positive peer relationships. They will support our use of MindUP and other social-emotional learning curriculum in the classroom. When students have access to high quality social emotional learning literature paired with quality instruction they will be able to better participate in school and build peer relationships. These books will support our social skills development, but will support their reading and language development. They will allow us to engage in discussions, writing and reading groups about how our brains work, happiness, gratitude, mindfulness, optimism, perspective taking, as well as a wide variety of other emotional health topics. My students social-emotional development will allow them to build and maintain positive relationships, integrate into the larger school community and grow academically.
