I value student choice and supporting students to work in a situation that allows them to do their best work. Some of my students prefer to work at their desks with others around. Some of my students like to work with headphones in a corner by their cubbies. Some take their books and read spread out on the carpet. Research shows that allowing students choices increases academic engagement, and flexible seating is a simple way to provide student choice. I want to provide my students more choices for seating for their work time, allowing them to experiment with different options and choosing a spot that supports their learning and engagement. This not only will help them with their math and literacy, but with their self-regulation and self-care habits. These chairs and cushions will also support students who learn better with movement or sensory stimuli, allowing them to be more fully integrated into our classroom community.
