In sixth grade ELA, students participate in literature discussion groups. These groups provide students with opportunities to talk about texts with classmates, all while utilizing comprehension strategies and practicing speaking/listening standards. Studies have proven that meaningful discussion around a text can improve overall comprehension. In order to have quality conversations, however, I need to ensure students are reading texts that are engaging and making them yearn to talk. To aid in this, I am constantly on the lookout for better books that are meaningful to students. The great thing about literature is that there are always new texts coming out, offering a plethora of choices for readers. Unfortunately, books cost money, especially when shopping for 70+ students. I am lucky to be in a district where quality text is valued and purchased for book rooms; however, there are often not enough novels for multiple groups within one grade level to use the same text. This project will provide more reading choices for my sixth grade literature discussion groups, while allowing larger sets of books (House Arrest, Counting by 7s and Ghost) to account for multiple classes.
