Molokai is a small rural island in the Hawaiian chain between Maui and Oahu with the highest population of Hawaiian students in the State. These students are very in tune with nature and outdoor activities; they have to travel off island to experience stop lights, shopping centers, and city life. Most are connected to social media and are aware of the outside world however they maintain a sense of innocence and pure creativity which I foster through my art program. Many struggle with self-confidence due to poor socio-economic status or come from homes where education is not a priority. Due to social and economic pressure our schools are loosing the very programs that inspire students and provide the creative outlets necessary to foster their natural gifts and allows them to apply abstract concepts learned in other content areas; when we don't consider their natural talents or provide creative outlets, some become at-risk students believing they will be fine hunting and fishing.
