One of the responsibilities of art club this year will be to design and create a painting for the outside of our school. We are asking for outdoor paint, primer, and polyurethane to withstand the weather. Students will use the paint to design a large painting with positive message. Public art installations, such as mural projects, have been widely recommended by educators and researchers for decades. Mural lessons provide opportunities for expanding learning beyond the typical classroom. They are highly valued in the arts because of its unique collaborative process. One of the most valuable lessons of a collaborative project such as this is responding to immediate problems that will arise in the process of designing and installing public art. Creating a school mural not only beautifies a school and develops student's artistic skills, but it can provide the whole school with a sense of pride, self-value, and community involvement. Public artwork can highlight the students' values and traditions while providing a moral message. My hope is that this installation will make the stories and messages behind my students' art more accessible to the Marine Park community.
