While world language is a graduation requirement and is known to increase cognitive ability, my school's limited resources are prioritized for instruction in state-tested subject areas. This puts my Spanish I and II students at a disadvantage: while students who study nearby in wealthy, predominantly-white suburban districts benefit from world-language instruction via smart boards and one-to-one laptop initiatives, my students in the heart of Jackson have access only to dry-erase boards and paper printouts. Students acquire language best when instruction is input-heavy, with opportunities to absorb new vocabulary structures through sound, image, and written language. With a digital projector, my students will get all three inputs: they will hear me speak a new Spanish word or phrase, they will see a representative image, GIF, or video, and they will read the written word! Having access to the full range of inputs helps us to stay in Spanish for most of our time together, promoting students' successful language acquisition.
