The Pirate Tinkerlab is a place for students to learn, create, design, and collaborate. The students have loved our Pirate Tinkerlab so far and have taken learning far beyond what was imagined. This project would allow the Pirate Tinkerlab to continue and expand. The Pirate Tinkerlab is a unique place where students use core standards, mix in creativity, ingenuity and develop solutions to world problems. The Pirate Tinker club will allow students to dig deeper into a subject that interests them and become an expert in that field. Research shows that students who have a choice in what they are learning are more engaged than when they are assigned a random topic. A second grader may want to learn more about paleontology. The Pirate Tinkerlab allows students to research what paleontologists do, take a virtual tour of an archaeological site, create a Google map of where fossils have been found, and then use the 3D printer to create bones and build their own dinosaur. This project will provide books and materials for students to learn about measurements, angles, and kinetic energy by making roller coasters out of cardboard or by designing the fastest car. When students are provided simple materials they can make extraordinary ideas come to life.
