The art materials requested will support students in developing a variety of art projects to give them an outlook on different methods of creating art. Our students only get art twice a month (at the most) and they miss out on a lot of mediums of art simply because there isn't enough time to complete art projects. Art and Crafts allow self-expression and they provide a healthy outlet for emotions. The Creativity Station is available for students who need additional support in developing their social/behavior needs. It is a part of our after school tutoring program that is offered to ALL of our students. Students work on reading and math for 40 minutes, they are provided a snack for 15 minutes, and they get the opportunity to participate in PE or the Creativity Station each day that they come to tutoring after school. Now, you may be thinking, you don't need art or PE for tutoring; however, it is the best way to support our students with social anxiety or behavioral deficits. Art and PE both help develop self-management of one's self. Students are required to follow directions and maintain a safe environment during these times. They almost always are socializing and participating in group activities (involving sharing, communication, and problem solving skills). We live in a world where so many students really need to learn these skills at school. Many of our students don't have the opportunity to learn these skills at home. Teachers are responsible for SO much more than academics. We fill so many gaps in our students' lives that we often stretch ourselves thin, but that is where Donors Choose comes in.
