The students at my school in Kentucky range from sixth graders to high school seniors. All are state agency children who were removed from their homes due to neglect, abuse, or some involvement in the legal system. Before coming to our school, the average student has been in thirty different homes in the last year, and this means that they have usually changed schools many times as a result. This disturbance in their personal and academic lives has placed them at a severe disadvantage and most do not read on level, and are not on grade level mathematically. Many have not been monitored as to attendance and most have missed so much school they are behind by several grade levels. These students need personalized attention and instruction to help them catch up with their same age peers.
