Many of my students are reluctant readers, believing that the classics are boring and/or outdated. However, I believe that all students are readers; most of them just haven't entered into their identities yet because they haven't been introduced to the book for them. Meeting my students where they are and developing their own ease with reading is my aim. Reading their own books of choice as a portion of my curriculum builds their comfort, their comprehension, and their perseverance through the difficult works that we read as a whole. As educators, we've been taught that sustained silent reading does everyone good, and with a classroom library at their fingertips, my students are much more willing to engage.
