I teach 900 students in a south Florida elementary school. My students come from working families that live in the neighborhoods surrounding my school; some families work two or three jobs. Many of my students are eligible for free and reduced price lunches. About 10 percent of the students at my school are eligible for services through Exceptional Student Education. When my students are at school, this is their opportunity to learn about and work with materials that they most likely would not be exposed to in their daily lives. The caring teachers at my school work their hardest to try to provide opportunities for our students. In the art room, I am trying to do the same. Art can be a relaxing experience that many students do not get to explore and experience on a regular basis.
