Writing is often how students respond to learning tasks in their homerooms and often what they take home to show their parents or display on a school wall. It is also a way to reflect and assert who we are, what we think and feel, and a way to inspire or encourage others. I have had students who were moved to write to principals, veterans, officials, authors, companies to express concern, opinion, or gratitude - they learn that writing is having a VOICE and that they have it! Of the 4 domains I teach, Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing - Writing is often the one that students struggle the most and longest with and need the most support with. I am asking for help to support my English as a Second Language student in grades K - 5 with their writing as we start the year remote learning. Journaling is no small task for them, yet, it brings them the same joy and learning as any student. My students need language support to write. In our classroom, these supports are everywhere and I can also work with them on their grade level assignment, but when learning from home, this is a challenge. These writing journals have built-in supports that work for writing that connects to the lessons I will teach via Zoom and other learning apps. They are also alternatives to grade-level writing assignments and can help students complete writing they feel proud of and successful with. Homeroom teachers will be able to tap into this resource for writing assigned students asynchronously.
