The occupational therapist and I have planned a sensory space that will address the various sensory needs of our students while providing them with a language-rich experience. Our students respond positively to the integration of sensory and language. Our focus is on the vestibular, tactile, and proprioceptive systems. The successful processing of sensory information through these systems provides a basis for higher order learning (i.e. language, academic skills). Our goal is to develop a space that provides sensory stimulation to enhance neurological processing and create functional language for our students. The materials listed below will help us to create this integrative space for our children that will incorporate the use of lights, sensory bins, swings, crash pads, and augmentative & alternative communication devices. With these items we will be able to create a space that encourages sensory play and fosters language development. We would love to be able to create stations with the items so that the children can engage in various sensory experiences. Our goal is to integrate the curriculum and preschool/kindergarten themes into our therapy. The animals/objects will be used to create different sensory bins that can support language related to those themes.
