The purpose of this project is to focus on a classic math problem - that shows how such a simple activity can quickly get complex. At the same time, students will be surprised that in a simple child's toy there is some rich and deep mathematics. While there are computer simulations of the Tower of Hanoi online, I have found that students are highly engaged in this activity when they have the actual pieces to manipulate. Our class periods last 90 minutes, and it is not enough time to get into all the math behind it. I have done this activity several times over the years and do to wear and tear, I need to get some replacements.
