As the multi-billion-dollar Esports industry is growing in global recognition, along with the potential of becoming an Olympic sport, colleges and universities are offering Esports scholarships in growing numbers. Esports participation is vast and has the potential to impact opportunities for students in ways far greater than most imagine. The opportunities for careers stemming from esports participation is rapidly expanding. Integrating Esports in the classroom is an excellent way to get buy-in from the students while developing soft skills. As part of our career skills curriculum, we currently focus on teamwork and collaboration through traditional assignments in the classroom. Esports promotes valuable employment soft skills such as communication, assertiveness, compromise, conflict management, active listening, and respect. The benefits of participating in extracurricular activities are well known in the education community. These benefits also can be achieved through participation in Esports as a classroom activity. Additionally, successful classroom implementation of these activities can serve as a bridge to extracurricular participation in our regional Esports league. Introducing Esports in the classroom also provides an opportunity to explore a wide variety of career opportunities in the Esports industry. Careers in Esports are not limited to gamers and programmers. The professional Esports industry, just like traditional professional sports, needs support professionals that include managers, marketing staff, broadcasters, technology and finance professionals, medical staff and recruiters. Providing exposure to this in the classroom opens up students’ views into potential careers that they may not have considered. All of this potential starts with integrating gaming equipment in the classroom. Funding this project in addition to utilizing the equipment in service in our small afterschool, extracurricular program, would provide adequate equipment to utilize gaming in our classroom to meet a variety of career-oriented educational goals.
