The students that pass through my class each year are primarily juniors, with a few sophomores and seniors sprinkled throughout. But they all share one thing: the curiosity of what is out there in our oceans. It is this curiosity that drives the instruction in my class. When students see something online or on TV they are so excited to ask me about it and then we will hold a discussion about it in class. Curiosity like this is a valuable tool because it will fuel their minds years after they leave my classroom. My students come from diverse backgrounds, but one thing that they have in common is that they are all about an hour away from the nearest beach. When taking a field trip to the coast I had one student see the water and asked me “is that the ocean?” That is when I realized that the closest some of these students will ever come to the ocean and all that it has to share, is through my classroom. I use my classroom as a porthole into what the ocean's have to offer.
