I teach art to 750 Kindergarten through 5th grade students in my school. North Pointe is a very diverse school community, where more than 40 languages are spoken every day. My students come from a variety of socio-economic, cultural, and academic backgrounds, yet art provides a special language of communication that gives people the ability to process daily life. In class, we are able to make a connection with another human being, whether it is by having the same emotional response to a work of art or by relating aesthetically. Every day, I get to expose my students to this passion of creating something from those same basic elements and I feel as if I view a special part of them each time they design something new.
