Our school is K-6, and our library does not include many young adult novels, especially newer titles, for our 6th graders because we are classified as an elementary school. Our school is also 80% students of color, and there is a lack of novels that represent them. Our students need to be engaged, and seeing themselves in the curriculum and readings is a much-needed step we can take to be more inclusive. My students need diverse, age-appropriate novels, that represent them to read at home when they are on distance learning days! We will be starting the year using a hybrid model with students attending class 2 days a week in-person and distance learning 3 days a week. These novels will be dispersed during in-person days for students to read and reflect on at home during distance learning times. Students will be able to exchange novels on planned days throughout the year.
