My class consists of English Learners and/or first generation immigrants that come from homes where many of their parents do not read, have access to books or a public library. Our school is in a low income area that does not receive much funding and will not be getting anymore funding this school year due to budget cuts. Therefore, the school has no funds to purchase core literature at this time for this particular group of students to access. Our school has recently had to let go of the librarian due to budget cuts which in turn has caused our school to have to shut down the school library. My students at this time do not have much acces to any books, let alone books of high interest. The only books that are available to them are a few books that I have in my classroom that are old and not in the best condition and or of high interest to the students. Would you want to read a torn up book that you cannot relate to?
