Writing is part of every subject in our classroom. Students write about their thinking in math, fill out thinking maps about a topic in social studies, explain the steps taken in a scientific inquiry, develop multi-paragraph essays to respond to a topic in writing, or make lists to brainstorm solutions to problems requiring their help. Providing a multitude of writing opportunities is part of what a teacher does and coming up with ways to engage students in this process is something I love to do! We write on big swatches of butcher paper, we write online, we write on post-its; we even use paper and pencil to jot down our thoughts. When students can write on their desks with dry erase markers, it's even more engaging! For years, I have sanded desktops and used dry erase paint to re-purpose them and provide a motivating writing surface for my students. It is exciting to see writers of all levels choose to take notes and list important details or ideas during lessons because it is FUN to write on your desk! Writing on desks has been a mainstay in my classroom for years, and is the choice of many students in my room. It would be wonderful to have the desktops last for more than one year!
