98% of my students in grades 1-5 receive free lunch and more than 75% of their families receive AFDC assistance. Most walk to our neighborhood school from a nearby housing development. With a mobility rate of 65%, my students lack security and stability. My students look to school as a safe haven, where they not only learn, but have basic needs like food, love and safety fulfilled. My students are happy learners, ready to do whatever is asked of them. Their compassion for others in need is amazing, considering they have so little themselves. The majority of my students lack the rich opportunities (music lessons, family outings to museums, concerts or even the beach) that are part of the normal, daily routine of more affluent children. I strive to give them as many of these experiences as possible to level the playing field for them as they grow into productive, young adults.
