I teach 4th grade in a diverse, rural elementary school. 33% or 8 out of my 24 students speak English as a Second Language. I celebrate this diversity everyday, but with it brings students who struggle to read on grade level. 42% of my class reads more than two levels below grade level. So, 10 out of 24 of my students read on a Kindergarten, first, or second grade level. These 10-year-olds deserve a better education. They should be able to read on grade level. I have taught in this rural school for two years and have never had a student computer in my classroom. Recently, my state has adopted the Common Core State Standards, and now 3 out of 10 of my writing standards deal with digital research. In 2015, my students are going to take a high stakes assessment on a computer and they will be asked to research a topic and write about it. Technology is in my students' future but they can't get their hands on it in my classroom.
