OUR students need books that they are able to relate, as well as shine light on the current state of our society. Students are often told what to read, and are rarely given choices that impact their love for reading, learning, and experiencing lifestyles that they are able to relate. The books I've chosen, with help from past students and parents, encompass a diverse span of cultures, for example, The Hate U Give brings the reality of a black boy's death by police to the forefront. Other sensitive and relevant subjects, such as, poverty, LGBTQ, and depression are also in the line-up of books chosen. These books will be used to support the curriculum through book club conversations and activities. Students will chose the book(s) they want to read and engage in meaningful discussions with their group. As the teacher, I will facilitate and foster a safe environment throughout the unit. The ultimate goal is a balanced understanding of social issues that promotes cultural responsive citizens.
