Reading often helps promote fluency. Fluency is important because it provides a connection between word recognition and comprehension. When fluent readers read silently, they recognize words automatically, allowing them to group words quickly to help them gain meaning from what is being read.
What can be done for those students who aren’t fluent readers? Listening to stories being read aloud not only helps promote fluency in struggling readers, but also makes stronger readers out of all students.
With school days being scheduled down to the minute, there is little time for teachers to read to their students. Finding a book that is interesting to all students is also a struggle. Combined, these issues cause many missed opportunities to promote fluency.
One option available to teachers and students is online books that are read aloud to students. This is a wonderful tool because stories vary in length and students can listen to books whenever there are a few free minutes. Also, there are a wide variety of online books covering numerous topics, so all students can find books that appeal to their interests.
I am hoping to raise enough money to purchase a class set of headphones that all my students can take advantage of the huge online library available to them. If all students had their own headphones, they could listen to stories anytime they had free time, instead of waiting until a pair of headphones becomes available.
Please help me help my students become avid, fluent, and lifelong readers!
