The purpose of this project is to prepare students in 6:1:1 classes for future employment opportunities. These products will be used to teach our students how to take iced tea/coffee orders, prepare the orders and distribute them to the correct teachers in the school. Students will also learn money skills and will use pretend money to understand spending and earning. Gaining these products will allow the speech therapists in the school to target a variety of speech and language areas, as well as job training and life skills.
One area that the created activity will allow the staff to target is social interaction skills. Appropriate social interactions are frequently challenging skills for students with autism to achieve. The Coffee/Iced Tea Cart Project will allow our students to practice these skills with other adults and peers in the school. Students will learn social skills that include, but are not limited to, greetings, initiating/maintaining/terminating conversations, and the importance of maintaining appropriate personal space when speaking.
Another area that will be targeted while participating in the created activity will be following directions. Following directions is an important skill to achieve when working in a job environment. Tasks that will be taught to our students during the activity will include writing down orders, brewing iced coffee and iced tea, creating drinks based on the orders given to them and bringing the orders to the correct teacher who ordered them. All of these tasks will require our students to follow directions which will be an important skill when transitioning into the job field and promoting independence.
