My school has about 2400 students. They are comprised of 40% Hispanic, 35% white, 15% Asian, 7% black, and 3% others. As well, 20% are socioeconomically disadvantaged. We have excellent students who do Calculus, but we also have Algebra 1 students who are doing the same course for the second or third time. These students do not like math. They walk into the classroom ready to do anything else but math. They would sleep, talk, or disrupt the class to avoid having to do any math, to the extent that they would rather be sent to the office than to admit that they do not know math and they need to learn math. As well, students are exposed to so many interesting video or web games that math is just too boring for some of them. To get their attention, I need to compete with their distractions.
