These critically-acclaimed young adult novels feature diverse characters and will empower my students by honing their literary skills as well as fostering understanding of others. Students will explore these novels in small groups called lit circles, emgaging in lively discussion, reflection, and written analysis. Exposing students to diverse characters who are portrayed in important, positive ways helps to create an accepting, peaceful society; Representation is empowering! Many students say they do not like to read, but it only takes one awesome book to reel them in and set them on a lifelong love of literature. These dynamic novels could make all the difference for my young readers-- they will be able to see themselves in the dynamic characters and situations, and hopefully fall in love with reading! :)
