Teaching is not just about reading, writing, and arithmetic; it is about inspiring and making a difference. My students have high expectations from me, not only in their work, but how we treat others in our class, school, and community. We look for lonely people in all three areas, and do many friendship building activities every week. I take surveys every week to see who students want to sit by so I can see whose name doesn't get written down, and who cannot think of anyone to write. With parent invites I attend extra-curricular activities and show my students they are important, and they are more than just a student sitting at a desk. They are someone to be celebrated. They are deserving of everything school and life can offer them. I believe that effective teaching stems from positive relationships, meticulous planning, and effective classroom instruction. Teaching to me isn't a job, it is a privilege.
